Selvedge denim takes its name from the "self-edge" — the tight, clean band woven on old shuttle looms that kept the fabric from fraying. From the 1890s through the 1950s, American mills like Cone's White Oak in Greensboro spun the indigo warp that built Levi's, Lee, and Wrangler. When projectile looms arrived in the 1960s, mills traded the self-edge for speed. The old shuttle looms were sold for scrap — or shipped to Japan. Weavers in Okayama bought them, slowed them down, and kept the craft alive. Today that prefecture still produces the densest, most characterful selvedge in the world.
